Swiss Dreams is a magazine that was born out of a love for inspiration. Inspiration both in a general sense of the word, and also as it specifically applies to all art, graphic design and Swiss Design. It is about inspiration and the intersection of different genres. It is inspired by the intersection between art and math, the arrangement of space and creativity. It is about creativity as a thread found throughout the world when you pay attention to it and cultivate it in your own personal art practice. It is a magazine for Swiss Design enthusiasts, art enthusiasts and people who want to be inspired. It is for math lovers and readers who appreciate a nice use of white space and minimal color palette.

This is a mood board for this project which you can also see on my Pinterest.

Background

It wasn’t until I studied typography that I got really inspired by the Swiss Design. When I read about Gerstner’s grid that he created for Capitol, what he called the mobile grid, it peaked my interest. As someone who loves creativity (dance, design, crochet, bedazzling, writing…) and also loved calculus and math, it was such an interesting

Target Audience

Swiss Design Enthusiasts. Art Enthusiasts. People who want to be inspired. Math Lovers. Readers who appreciate a nice use of white space and a minimal color palette. Anyone who is creative or likes to be inspired.

Design Problem

Design a magazine with a clear system for cover artwork that can be expanded to future years and subjects. Create inner spreads with a baseline grid and a compound grid using a clear number system.

Design Solution

This magazine is both an example of my ability to organize type and words, as well as to execute design systems and number systems. The system for the cover can be used for many years. The inpspiration and system is clear as well as simple enough to be able to stay interesting and fresh. The inner spreads are clean and minimal, but also crisp and interesting.

Design Process

I spent time researching grid systems, and Gertner’s compound grids as well as Tschichod’s work and the Van de Graaf canon. I worked on recreating these elements from their work so that I could understand them and to (hopefully) be able to apply them to my own work. For this project I recreated Gerstner’s compound (mobile) grid for the dimensions used in the magazine. I was also very inspired by Muller-Brockmann’s work and the Beethoven poster. The system that he used was very interesting, and was the inspiration for the cover of the magazine.

Through the process of creation I was able to both grow and refine my appreciation for Swiss Design and its connection to other genres and artwork. I know that this subject is rich, and my appreciation will only deepen through time, work and study.

The issues will alternate the cover article subject. Odd number issues are subjects that are graphic design oriented (Swiss Design, History, Famous Graphic Designers.) The even number issues have lead stories that are focused on other genres (Dance, Visual Art, other areas of Inspiration.) If the color of the title Swiss Dreams on the Spine is off white, then you know it is an issue that is focused on more traditional graphic design. If the title on the spine is a color it is a cross-genre focused lead story.

The baseline Grid is 8pt, and elements of modular grid are based on this. The gutter is 2 baselines (16pt.) The modular grid is 5 sections wide by 7 sections tall. The 7th row of the modular grid is to only be used for page numbering and other folio information as well as notes. None of the articles or artwork go below the 6th row in the modular grid, leaving open space on many spreads.

Perhaps Gerstner’s grid can help organize brains too.
